Synthomer Partnership Advances Bio-Based Butyl Acrylate Development

Adhesives, Industry News, Sealants,

Synthomer has announced a partnership with Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL) focused on developing bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived monomers. According to the companies, the collaboration centers on commercializing bio-based butyl acrylate produced using bio-based butanol supplied by GBL.

The companies indicated that the initiative is intended to support the transition toward renewable raw materials within the chemical industry. Bio-based butyl acrylate is used as a building block in various polymer applications, including adhesives, coatings, and sealants.

Chris Brown, Vice President of ESG at Synthomer, said the collaboration enables the company to provide customers with an alternative to conventional fossil-based monomers. He noted that the initiative is also intended to help customers address emissions targets while responding to demand for more sustainable materials.

Brown added that expanding access to bio-based solutions may also strengthen the resilience of Synthomer’s monomers portfolio and support evolving customer requirements.

Godavari Biorefineries stated that the project aligns with its broader strategy of developing renewable chemical solutions. Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of GBL, said the partnership reflects the company’s focus on advancing bio-based materials designed to reduce carbon footprint across the value chain.

The companies indicated that collaborations between chemical producers and renewable feedstock suppliers are expected to play an increasing role in expanding adoption of bio-based chemistry within the industry.
