While reporting to the Technology Senior Director, you will be responsible for conceiving, designing and testing new adhesive products; conducting trials to ensure that newly developed products are transferred at production at the Sonoco Adhesive Division and commercialized at customer locations.
What you'll be doing:
- Conceive, design and test new adhesive or coating products; conduct trials to ensure that newly developed products are successfully transferred to production at the Sonoco Adhesive Division and commercialized at internal and external customer locations
- Assist sales and business development functions in identifying prospects, conduct technical discovery, and provide assessment on probability of success. Leverage new technologies and new products to new customers, industry segments and markets.
- Utilize analytical troubleshooting and Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other tools to enhance performances of existing products, reduce total manufacturing costs, and improve productivity in support of customers’ business objectives.
- Support the supply chain management team in identifying and qualifying vendors of raw materials and additives.
- Keep abreast of novel technologies in adhesive industry. Assess and recommend feasibility of such technical innovations for Sonoco applications.
- Lead or support quality assurance function in identifying root causes of quality issues, establishing and implementing control changes to provide long-term sustainable improvements at customer locations
- Maintain complete and accurate records on intellectual properties and pursue patent application or trade secrets as appropriate.
- Effectively communicate project status, technical market assessment, and recommendations to all stakeholders.
We'd love to hear from you if:
- Must have a 4 year Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science, or other related fields
- A minimum of 5 year experience in formulating water based adhesives; knowledge in paperboard and food grade packaging desirable
- Ability to aggressively attack complex problems and identify feasible or optimal solutions
- Applies creativity and innovation to achieve technical and business objectives
- Ability to simultaneously lead or participate in multiple cross-functional teams in a dynamic, fast paced environment
- Willingness to be an individual contributor, conducting bench or trial work with minimal supervision

Compensation:
The annual base salary range for this role is from $135,600 to $152,550, plus an annual target bonus of 12.5% of base salary.

- Lead emerging regulations projects for timely implementation of emerging regulations associated with material compliance

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a Science or Engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start)
- Five (5) years combined experience in Product Compliance, Product Stewardship, Sustainability, Materials science, Quality, or Regulatory Affairs role in a private, public, government or military environment
- Three (3) years of project management experience
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Master’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution
- Experience working with high-risk applications, global customers, global regulatory bodies, and government agencies
- Strong project management skills and proven ability to work independently, manage multiple global projects, have a thirst for learning, and drive for tangible results in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
- Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders, effectively translating complex concepts into clear, understandable ideas.

POSITION: Research Scientist - Adhesives and Coatings

We are seeking a hands-on Research Scientist to lead the development of solvent-based and water-based copolyester adhesives and coatings, specifically for Bostik’s Vitel® copolyester product line. This role supports innovation and product maintenance in food and industrial flexible packaging applications, with a strong focus on customer engagement and cross-functional collaboration.
Job Dimensions
- Drive new product development and product line maintenance for Vitel® copolyester adhesives and coatings. Applications cover food and industrial markets using this technology.
- Material science and application expertise in the flexible packaging market is necessary.
- Collaborate with regulatory, analytical, supply chain, tech service, sales, and manufacturing teams to support product development and troubleshooting.
- Work productively in the lab to support all R&D projects for the assigned market/technology with accuracy, precision, and responsiveness.
- Prepare detailed technical documentation and present findings to internal teams. Utilize electronic lab notebook.
- Ensure adherence to safety policies, 5S lab practices, and quality protocols.
Activities
- Execute bench-scale synthesis using condensation polymerization, including safe handling of isocyanates and solvents.
- Design, plan and conduct experiments using design of experiments (DoE) methodology; analyze data and draw actionable conclusions. Work with legal team to review freedom to operate.
- Translate lab results into scalable, commercialized products; support plant-scale production.
- Support internal and external customers with technical guidance, including issue resolution and continuous improvement.
- Complete necessary testing of new ideas and products, leading to the submission of invention disclosures or patents.
- Operate in compliance with site safety EHS policies and quality management systems.
- Follow applicable work instructions or standard operating procedures. Recognize deviations from routines.
- Identify improvements in test methods, validate them, and update work instructions/ standard operating procedures as applicable.
Accountabilities
Product line ownership from R&D perspective and maintenance as well as new product development of copolyester products.
Manage technical projects by completion of lab analyses and pilot trials leading to commercialization of new products. Be a strong team player. Follow stage gate process and manage projects to completion with timeliness.
Lead problem resolution through a thorough understanding of the issue.
Effective and efficient use of Bostik resources and coordination of support from other Bostik functions with responsiveness and a commitment to timelines.
What you’ll Bring
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science, or related field.
- 2+ years of industry experience in adhesives or coatings development.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in polyester synthesis and formulation of water- and solvent-based systems.
- Deep knowledge of polymer chemistry and structure–property relationships.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with statistical analysis, DoE, and stage gate processes.

Key Responsibilities (Summary)
Reporting directly to the Sales Manager, the Account Manager is responsible for developing new customer relationships and managing oleochemical sales and services of Cremer North America business products.
Position Requirements
Education:
B.A. or B.S degree in a Business-related or STEM related discipline or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience:

- At least 2 to 3 years of experience in a marketing or sales position.
- Must reside with assigned geographic region.
Territory could be located in the following regions: Northeast / Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southeast or West - Working knowledge of oleo chemical products and chemical services, such as flaking and pastilles.
- Travel for customer visits within the assigned territory 3 – 4 days per week; up to 3-4 weeks per month.
