3M and BOE Launch Joint Lab to Advance Adhesives and Materials for Next-Generation Displays

3M and BOE have opened a joint research and development laboratory at the BOE Technology Innovation Center to accelerate innovation in display materials and technologies.

The new 3M and BOE Joint Laboratory expands a collaboration between the companies that has lasted more than 20 years. Research will focus on materials including optically clear adhesives, structural adhesives, optical films, and other emerging technologies for LCD, OLED, and MLED display applications.

According to the companies, the laboratory is intended to bring materials development into the display design process earlier, combining BOE’s display and application expertise with 3M’s materials science capabilities. Key areas of work include foldable displays, ultra-narrow bezel processes, improved optical efficiency, and new display architectures.

The collaboration has already supported commercial developments in flexible displays. 3M stated that its optical adhesives and customized bonding solutions have contributed to the reliability and design of BOE’s foldable display technologies. The companies also showcased a mirror-like “crease-free” OLED flexible display incorporating 3M foldable optical adhesive technology.

The laboratory combines simulation, optical testing, and mechanical reliability testing resources from both companies to support development and validation of new materials and display solutions.

The companies also introduced a Joint Initiative for Ecosystem Synergy aimed at promoting collaborative technical development, shared standards, and lower-carbon development across the display value chain.
