Kaneka Releases Eco and Sustainability Certified Polymers for Flooring Adhesive Use
Over recent years the possibilities in both parquet and vinyl flooring installation and design have increased substantially. The size of the parquet boards can now range from 6 to 14 cm in width and lengths up to 250 cm. The most common wood is still oak, but is expanded to include bamboo, pine, walnut, and hardwood such as Jatoba, Merbau, Ipé, etc.
For both renovation and new installations, it makes the technical requirements for the parquet adhesives more demanding and different
types of adhesives will be required. A similar story is in place for LVT flooring, the raw material composition can significantly
differ depending on type of LVT and will affect the adhesion properties, the design and size is also continuously changing. Moreover, the increasingly stricter chemical regulations on raw materials and importance of eco and sustainability certification, combined with the indoor air quality specifications, have forced the flooring adhesive producer to be more inventive than ever before.
Kaneka reports that their MS Polymer™ for adhesives can help with these ever changing requirements. More than 45 years ago, the first Kaneka MS Polymer was introduced on the market and since then the number of grades and applications continuously grown. The Kaneka MS Polymer are differentiated by the degree of silane functionalization and the backbone structure.
The company reports that these features will provide unique and well balanced properties such as durability, reactivity, and storage stability. Kaneka MS Polymer™ is a preferred base material for adhesives for indoor use, such as flooring and general purpose adhesives, and more specifically parquet and LVT floor adhesives, according to the company.
The versatility of the properties of Kaneka MS Polymer makes it the ideal base material for parquet and LVT adhesives:
- Low VOC’s and low odor or smell
- Primer-less adhesion to different types of wood and LVT
- Ranging from elastic to hard non-elastic
- Low viscosity and easy workability
- Phthalate or plasticizer free
- No shrinkage, water-and solvent-free
