Covestro Expands pMDI Portfolio with Lower-Carbon Desmodur® Grade
Covestro has expanded its polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) portfolio in Europe with the introduction of Desmodur® ClimateValue (CV), a new grade with a reduced Product Carbon Footprint compared with conventional Desmodur® products.
According to Covestro, Desmodur® CV provides an approximately 25% reduction in Product Carbon Footprint compared with standard Desmodur® grades used in insulation applications. The reduction is achieved through renewable energy use, process improvements, efficiency measures, and supply chain decarbonization.
The product’s carbon footprint is calculated using a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment methodology certified by TÜV Rheinland. Covestro stated that the material is commercially available to pMDI customers supplied from its production sites in Germany.
Desmodur® CV is designed as a drop-in material, allowing customers to adopt the lower-carbon grade without changing existing formulations or production processes.
“Our customers want to act now on their climate targets — and they need a partner they can trust to act with them,” said Bernd Hennig, Head of Trading Cluster MDI EMLA at Covestro. He said the material is intended to help customers reduce Scope 3 emissions without disrupting existing operations.
The new grade complements Covestro’s existing Desmodur® CQ portfolio, which uses attributed alternative raw materials to address circularity. Together, the two product families provide different approaches to reducing the environmental footprint of MDI-based applications.
