Synthomer Partners with Godavari Biorefineries to Develop Bio-Based Monomers
Synthomer has announced a partnership with Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL) to develop bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived monomers, with an initial focus on bio-based butyl acrylate.
According to Synthomer, the collaboration will utilize bio-based butanol produced by GBL as a feedstock for manufacturing butyl acrylate, a widely used monomer in coatings, adhesives, and other polymer applications. The companies stated that the initiative is intended to support increasing market demand for lower-carbon raw materials.
Chris Brown, Vice President of ESG at Synthomer, said the partnership enables the company to offer alternatives to conventional fossil-based monomers while addressing customer sustainability goals. He noted that expanding access to bio-based inputs is also intended to strengthen the resilience of Synthomer’s monomers portfolio.
Godavari Biorefineries indicated that the project builds on its integrated biorefinery operations and use of renewable feedstocks. Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of GBL, said the collaboration reflects the company’s focus on developing materials designed to reduce carbon footprint across the value chain.
Both companies stated that partnerships of this type are intended to support broader adoption of bio-based chemistry and contribute to long-term sustainability initiatives within the chemical industry.
