Henkel Adds Flame-Resistant SMP Adhesive Sealant for Rail Applications
Henkel has introduced Teroson MS 949 FR, a flame-resistant silane-modified polymer (SMP) adhesive sealant developed for railcar interior and exterior sealing applications.
According to the company, the new material is intended for use in areas including windows, doors, floor panels, side panels, ceilings, lighting systems, HVAC components, and partitions between driver and passenger compartments. Henkel stated that the product was developed to address rail industry requirements related to fire resistance, durability, and processing efficiency.
The company reports that Teroson MS 949 FR meets the EN 45545-2 fire safety standard for rail applications and demonstrated low smoke emissions during testing. Henkel also stated that the sealant does not ignite at oxygen concentrations up to 28%.
In addition, Henkel said the product forms a skin in approximately 30 minutes under high-humidity conditions and provides adhesion across multiple substrates, including glass, metal, reinforced plastics, and painted surfaces. The company further reported that the material maintains adhesion performance after water immersion and is resistant to UV exposure, humidity, and aggressive cleaning agents.
Guillaume Sandoz, lead application engineer at Henkel, said rail manufacturers are facing increasing demands related to safety, reliability, cost efficiency, and evolving health and environmental regulations. He said the new formulation was developed to address sealing requirements within that context.
Henkel stated that the product is based on its SMP chemistry platform and is formulated without tin, phthalates, isocyanates, solvents, BPA, or PFAS. According to the company, the sealant also eliminates the need for primer in many applications, which may simplify processing, maintenance, and inventory management.
