Event Details

Abstract:

Obtaining strong, reliable adhesion of adhesives, paints, and sealants to plastics can be challenging but is completely achievable in a practical manner through the systematic application of a few readily understandable concepts. This webinar begins by outlining the six characteristics of reliable and practical high-performance suface treatment processes, and then provides strategies for developing and deploying such processes for any given material system. An emphasis is made on quantifiable processes that are suited for modern statistical quality control methods to maximize yields, product quality, and customer satisfaction. Problem-solving tools are presented and discussed that take guesswork out of process development as well as process control.

Objectives:

  1. Gain a basic appreciation and understanding for the phenomenon of adhesion to polymers, what prevents adhesion, and what approaches can be used to maximize adhesion.
  2. Learn the basic requirements for an industrially practical surface treatment process for bonding, painting or coating.
  3. Develop an  understanding of the relationship between polymer chemical composition, structure, and adhesion; thermosets vs thermoplastics, amorphous vs semi crystalline.
  4. Learn about the effects of polymer additives, processing, and handling on adhesion.

Agenda:

  1. Definition of adhesion
  2. Surfaces and surface properties: the physico-chemical origins of adhesion
  3. Overall goals of surface preparation for bonding
  4. Surface analysis and adhesion testing
  5. Effect of polymer structure and composition on surface treatment strategy: Thermoplastics, Elastomers, Thermosets
  6. Polymer surface treatments: Oxidative treatments (plasma/corona/flame); Mechanical treatments (abrasion); Primers
  7. Examples
  8. Q & A

Who Should Attend:

This webinar is applicable to various market segments including assembly, transportation, DIY and footwear industry. Professionals in technical roles, new or established will learn about the various ways adhesion can be improved on hard to bind surfaces. This is an ideal webinar for technology managers, R&D scientists, chemists, process engineers, TS&D and manufacturing professionals.
