With the increased interest and demand in lightweighting, structural adhesives development is in the forefront in transportation applications where toughness, durability and load bearing capabilities are required with a weight savings over traditional materials. This webinar will introduce the role of structural adhesives in joining dissimilar materials, describe the selection, integration and performance of bonded assemblies, and show how the incorporation of adhesives with conventional mechanical fastening can improve design, performance and durability. You are encouraged to bring your questions to our expert to address your specific needs during the Q&A session.

Key Topics/Objectives:

  • Learn what constitutes a structural adhesive
  • Explore selection criteria for structural adhesives use, integration and performance
  • Learn where adhesives are used alone and in combination with mechanical fastening methods like welding and riveting to join dissimilar materials and lightweight structures

Expert Presenter:     George Ritter, PhD, Principal Engineer, Adhesives, EWI

George specializes in the areas of adhesives bonding systems and processes including adhesives applications for metals and plastics in automotive, aerospace, marine, general industrial, electronics, and medical fields. His current work includes investigations of composites-to-metals bonding, laser-weldbonded aluminum structure, bonding of dissimilar metals and ceramics for lightweight structures and armor, medical bonding of plastics and metals, and selection of specific adhesives for specific end uses. George has had industrial experience in the development and marketing of adhesives for automotive, flexible packaging, nonwoven disposables, woodworking, and polymer composites using epoxy, urethane, hotmelt, and waterborne adhesives. He holds several U.S. patents in adhesive materials and is a co-recipient of the U.S. Department of Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Award for his work.
