Polyurethanes, one of the most versatile chemistries, touch every aspect of our lives. From the shoes we wear, to the beds we sleep in, to the rotating blades of wind turbines.  With versatility however, comes complexity. This webinar will cover the primary concepts of designing polyurethanes for specific application from the ground up. Principles of polymer science, urethane raw materials and reactions will be reviewed in depth to provide a solid background to understand how morphology dictates properties.

The second webinar in the series (March 31) “Polyurethane Adhesive and Sealants,” will then apply these concepts to design and reference the different types of urethane adhesive and sealants that are commercially available. A comprehensive review of all urethane adhesives types will be presented.

This technical webinar series is designed for chemists that are new to, or experienced in polyurethanes and will show how to use/manipulate the building blocks of urethanes to specific performance characteristics.

Key Topics/Objectives

  • Quick review of the basic concepts of polymer science.
  • The common urethane reactions and the raw materials used in urethane adhesives and sealant.
  • Understand how morphology helps to predict physical properties and illustrate how urethane morphology is different from most structural adhesives.
  • How to select polyols to design the urethane to be a rubber or plastic, durable or biodegradable, hydrophobic or hydrophilic.  What are the advantages of amorphous or partially crystalline morphology in polyols.
  • How to select the chain extender and isocyanate to function as the hard segment and corresponding physical properties due to amorphous or partially crystalline morphologies
  • Understand the concepts of resilience or energy absorption and how to design for these properties.
