The basic concepts, formulations, and test methods of pressure-sensitive adhesive will be presented. The importance of interfacial interactions, viscous loss, and extensibility will be highlighted. The common rheological tests are described and the direct relationship of deformation rate and test temperature is emphasized. The much longer time scale for bond formation versus rate of deformation upon debonding in peel or tack is expoited by the formulator to optimize properties. The formulating principles and common ingredients for preparing acrylic- and rubber-based adhesives will be described, and the performance capabilites of these two types of PSAs will be contrasted.

Dr. Charles Paul, Henkel


Dr. Paul is responsible for technology assessments for M&A and Venturing and supports Open Innovation within North America for the R&D teams. Since joining Henkel in 1988 he has held a number of positions within R&D.  His experience covers almost all categories of adhesive and wide-ranging applications: from jet engines to hair spray, polyimides to starch. Chuck holds over 50 US patents and coauthored numerous publications including five book chapters on adhesives. He has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, College of Chemistry.
