Surfactants play a very critical role in the formation of stable aqueous polymers. Understanding the technology behind surfactant package selection in dispersion, emulsion and hybrid systems is important for optimizing waterborne formulations in adhesives and sealants. Properly designed reactive surfactants offer additional degrees of freedom in formulation development while eliminating migration issues and improving end use performance. A comprehensive review on publications and patents will also be included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand surfactant fundamentals including why they are necessary, how they work, and selection criteria
  • Review surfactants types for both dispersions and emulsion polymers
  • Discuss how surfactants are utilized in formulations
