Joining of materials and components is inevitable as it allows versatility in assembly and repair along with reduction in time and cost of manufacturing. This webinar will focus on 'reversible adhesives' that inherit all the benefits of bonded joints, such as lightweight, eliminate holes and associated stress-concentrations, and overcomes its shortcomings of disassembly and repair. Reversible adhesives are thermoplastic adhesives modified by the incorporation of conductive nanoplatelets that can quickly couple to electromagnetic radiation via non-contact methods and increase the adhesive temperature to above the required processing temperatures. The adhesive melts and flows over the adherends and upon cooling forms a structural adhesive bond. Furthermore, the process can be used to disassemble the adhesive joint if repair or reworking is required.

This webinar will highlight two nanoparticle modifications (graphene and iron-oxide) in thermoplastics. Thermo-mechanical properties of resulting adhesives and joints will be showcased. Also, the strains developed during electromagnetic assembly and rapid cooling will be discussed. Additionally, computational multi-scale modeling of adhesive and joints and its potential to create material databases beyond the experimental matrix will be highlighted. The approach taken in this work, its challenges and future directions will be presented. Lastly, the potential of this material for a wide range of applications in automotive, construction and defense industries will be presented.: Challenges and Path Forward

Expert Presenter:

 

Dr. Mahmoodul Haq – Asst. Professor, Michigan State University (MSU)

Dr. Mahmoodul Haq is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), in the area of Structural Engineering and Mechanics of Materials at Michigan State University (MSU). He leads the group on 'Structural Joining and Tailorable Materials,' at the Composite Vehicle Research Center (CVRC) at MSU. He obtained his MS and PhD in the area of Structural Engineering and Mechanics of Materials in CEE at Michigan State University. He got his B.S from University of Madras, India where he received the governor's gold medal for the top place among ~2000 students. He also holds Adjunct Professor positions in the departments of Chemical Engineering and Material Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at MSU. His research interests include multi-material joining, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), multi-scale reinforced hybrid/tailorable composites, and computational simulation of materials and structures. He has multiple publications and research grants on these topics and holds four patents.
