Description

The basic concepts, formulations, and test methods of pressure-sensitive adhesive will be presented. The importance of interfacial interactions, viscous loss, and extensibility will be highlighted. The common rheological tests are described and the direct relationship of deformation rate and test temperature is emphasized. The much longer time scale for bond formation versus rate of deformation upon debonding in peel or tack is expoited by the formulator to optimize properties. The formulating principles and common ingredients for preparing acrylic- and rubber-based adhesives will be described, and the performance capabilites of these two types of PSAs will be contrasted.

Objective:

Get an understanding of what makes a material pressure sensitive and how is this achieved / optimized through formulation in common systems.

Agenda:

  1. Obtaining Tack
  2. Where does surface energy come in?
  3. Tack and Peel
  4. Probe "Tack" vs. Steady Peel
  5. Shear
  6. Rheology and its Limitations
  7. Backings and Release Liners
  8. Acrylics
  9. Rubber-Based and Comparison
  10. Summary
