Adhesive Processing - Mixing & Dispensing Technologies

ASC Stand Alone Short Course | June 18 - 20, 2018
Cleveland, Ohio

Adhesives are made from very diverse chemistries that utilize heat, liquid carriers or reactions to enable a manageable working viscosity for application to substrates for bonding. Understanding the fundamentals of polymer science; morphology, structure/property relationships, is essential to predict and tune dispensing viscosity, green strength build and final performance characteristics for specific application/markets. While the primary adhesive properties are attributed to the polymer, it is necessary to formulate with additive such as fillers, rheology modifiers, adhesion promotors and often stabilizers to best balance the desired dispensing requirements with performance targets.

In this two day short course, the thermal, mechanical and rheological considerations of mixing the formulation package and common application/dispensing processes will be discussed by technology types. The effect of drying/solidification process on changes in chemistry, molecular weight and morphology and the resulting impact on adhesion, shrinkage and induced stresses will be addressed as a function of mixing and dispensing processes.
