Field Adhesion Tests for Construction Sealants

Application conditions and methods will determine whether or not construction sealants perform to specification. Rework is costly, so experts recommend on-site tests to ensure that there are no potentially costly errors. In field adhesion tests, the join sealant is applied on site and then tested by cutting an area of the sealant to see how well it is adhering to the substrate.

A failed test could indicate a range of potential problems to eliminate. For example, the sealant or primer could be contaminated, the substrate may not have been cleaned properly, the wrong primer may have been chosen or the primer may have been applied incorrectly, the substrate could have too much movement, coatings could be incompatible, and so on. There are two possible types of failure to look for: cohesive failure, and adhesive failure. 

When conducting a field adhesion test, a log recording the date and location of the adhesion test, the age and identity of the sealant, the width and depth of the sealant applied, and the test results should be kept.
