Tesla to Use Conductive Adhesive to Bond and Connect Solar Panels

Posted By ASC, Thursday, September 21, 2017

Elon Musk may be best known for his electric cars and Space-X program, but he also has plans to revolutionize energy generation with solar roofs and solar panels. His acquisition of SolarCity in 2016 meant that Tesla also acquired the patent to a new way of manufacturing solar panels. Solar panels consist of multiple interconnected solar cells. Previously, they had to be soldered together or they were bonded in a convection oven.

However, a new thermo-setting adhesive could make the process much more efficient. It not only bonds the cells together, but also allows current to be conducted between cells without the need for additional soldering. Apart from eliminating possible warping of solar panels during the bonding process, the adhesive could make solar panels last longer after they have been installed, reducing the plummeting cost of solar energy still further.
