Teenager Launches Medical Adhesive Tape Business to Help Diabetics Using Wearable Devices

Posted By ASC, Monday, June 5, 2017

Nineteen-year-old Meghan Sharkus may still be a student, but she has launched her own company. She noticed that friends who use wearable insulin or glucose monitors would stop using them because the tape that holds them in place didn’t stay in place.

Researching the issue, she found that 60 percent of people stop using their medical monitoring devices because of issues with the tape that secures them. But Meghan’s tape does more than just help devices to stay on. Young people can choose to make a statement with adhesive patches shaped like footballs, animals or hearts, or they can opt for pretty floral patterns.

She’s chosen a super-thin adhesive that allows medical device users to adjust their adhesive patches, removing and replacing them comfortably. Despite the ease with which the patches peel off, they remain firmly attached to skin, even under wet conditions. Meghan says that the response to her new product has been overwhelming, and she is currently running a kickstarter campaign for her new business, ExpressionMed.
