ASC Will Continue to Monitor End User Marketplace for Future Direction
of Green Building Advancement

April 27, 2017 – Bethesda, MD – The Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) with guidance from its PCR/EPD Task Force and the Board of Directors have decided not to pursue an industry wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for sealants in 2017.

ASC has had a task group for the past 4-1/2 years examining the pros and cons of PCR and EPD development. ASC developed and published a Product Category Rule (PCR) in the fall of 2016 which can be reviewed HERE. Product Category Rules (PCR) define the rules and requirements for EPDs of a certain product category. They are a key part of ISO 14025 as they enable transparency and comparability between EPDs.

“Our sealant members and non ASC member sealant stakeholders have spoken and we do not have consensus on the equality of benefits for an Industry Wide EPD for sealants,” indicates Steve Duren, Senior Director at ASC and staff task group leader. “With the change in administration in Washington DC and unclear future adoption with the downstream markets for EPDs, ASC will continue to monitor the end user marketplace to determine if building owners, architecture & engineering firms and jurisdictions will start to focus on more relevant ways to manage costs and put more merit in cost/benefit modeling in the green building area with more of an emphasis on functional performance,” says Duren.

“The ASC Task Group efforts in polling the sealant industry resulted in a split industry on whether ASC should move forward with the Industry Wide EPD,” indicates Steve Rosenberg– Senior Vice President Risk, Quality & Sustainability - Sika Corporation and Chairman of ASC Task Force. “There were multiple issues raised during this survey by various Sealant Manufacturers about the utility of the EPD and the effort needed to develop an Industry Wide version,” says Rosenberg.

ASC would like to thank all of the members of the task force for their involvement in this effort.
ASC has disbanded the PCR/EPD task group for sealants, and its strategic focus for the remainder of 2017 will be on developing its new long range plan.
