ASC Provides Members with GHS Customer Guidance

March 13, 2014 – Bethesda, MD – Anticipating that adhesive and sealant formulators will begin receiving questions regarding the new Global Harmonization System (GHS) labeling system being adopted in the United States, the Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) has designed a two-page educational document to help members outline the changes to their customers.

“Being chemical formulators, our members and their employees have been immersed in the changing regulations for more than two years,” said Mark Collatz, ASC Director of Regulatory Affairs.  “The challenge now is to help the downstream customers understand why some of the new chemical warning labels will look differently and that MSDS-type information will be expanded through the new Safety Data Sheets (SDS).”

While the new Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) rules became fully operational in 2012, chemical manufacturers and formulators must comply with all new product labeling requirements and revised SDS information by June 2015. All work place labeling and employee training for industries utilizing chemical formulated products must be done by June 2016.

ASC members may review the guidance document here and are encouraged to forward it on to customers with their own customized letter of explanation.  Companies contemplating an ASC membership are invited to consider joining the Council in order to become part of efforts of this nature that advance the industry through the education of those using their products.

“We hope that this document will contribute to a seamless transition between our members and their customers in understanding and implementing this new chemical hazard labeling system that will be used throughout most of the world,” said Collatz.
