Webinar Time:
August 19, 2015 – 10:00 AM EST (60 minutes) presentation including Q&A session
Session Description:
Adhesion to any substrate is determined by the surface energetics which in turn is dependent on the composition and micro/macro structure of the surface. Understanding the changes that occur at a molecular level when a liquid coating or adhesive is brought into contact with a solid surface and then solidified to create a bond is key to successful and durable adhesion. Surface treatment and contamination play an important role in the adhesion compatibility of a surface. This webinar will focus on providing a deeper understanding of various factors that control adhesion as well as the methodology that is in use to control and detect them.
- The simple fundamentals of adhesion: surfaces, coatings, and adhesives; why some things stick (and others don’t)
- What happens to surfaces in manufacturing
- Why we need to understand and control surfaces
- How can we measure and control surface properties
- Surface treatments: detergent cleaning, solvent cleaning, abrasion, plasma, flame, corona
Technical professionals who are in responsible for developing, manufacturing commercializing or troubleshooting adhesive, sealant and coating applications in new and existing markets. The content will drive efficient and optimum development through a fundamental understanding of principles involved in forming and measuring durable bonds over time and in less than ideal environments.

Expert Presenter:

Giles Dillingham President and Chief Scientist Brighton Technologies Group, Inc.
Giles Dillingham is President and Chief Scientist of Brighton Technologies Group, Inc., an advanced materials company specializing in surface engineering and surface energy measurement instrumentation. After receiving his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Dillingham worked in the Advanced Composites laboratory of the Dow Chemical Company developing surface treatments for high modulus polymeric fiber reinforcements. Later as Technical Director of HiTech Polymers he oversaw development and manufacture of thermoplastic blends and composites. He has worked extensively with the Materials Science Department at the University of Cincinnati to help develop fundamental understanding of the relationships between composite surface morphology and composition, and adhesive joint performance. Dr. Dillingham has been an active member of the adhesion Society since the 1980's (!) and is a Robert L. Patrick Fellow of the Society. He has over 120 publications and patents.
