Bulk properties of adhesives and sealants are primarily due to the choice of polymer. This 90 minute webinar will provide an introduction into what makes long chain molecules so unique and how this molecular structure dictates properties and resulting performance in adhesives and sealants. Explore how structure and morphology of macromolecules contribute to thermal, mechanical and viscoelastic properties.
Understand what gives long chain molecules their unique properties useful in adhesives and sealants.
Review principles of molecular weight, chain packing and order, entanglements and how these properties impact thermal transitions and mechanical properties.
This course is designed to be an introduction for both technical and business professionals who want to learn and apply fundamental polymer principles in selecting, evaluating and understanding adhesives and sealants. A background or knowledge of chemistry is not necessary.
Paul Painter is a Professor of Polymer Science and Engineering in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Penn State University. He was born in Birmingham, England and obtained BSc and MSc degrees from University College, London. After fooling around for a couple of years doing things like Voluntary Service Overseas (the British equivalent of Peace Corps), he came to the U.S. in 1972 to study Macromolecular Science at case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He joined the faculty at Penn State in 1976 and apart from a temporary leave of absence to serve as a “rotator” running the Polymers Program at the National Science Foundation, he has been there ever since. He has published more than 250 papers on various subjects and was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1999. In collaboration with Mike Coleman, he has also published four textbooks and three CDs. One of the textbooks and two of the CDs are general undergraduate texts. The others are monographs on polymer spectroscopy and the phase behavior of polymer blends.
