Adhesives Key to World-First Lightweight Composite Motorhome

Posted By ASC, Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Motorhome manufacturers the Swift Group have designed and assembled a glass-reinforced-plastic (GRP) motorhome with no timber or ply in the bodywork. This is a world first from a company that has long been known for its use of revolutionary materials. The company introduced its innovative SMART HT motorhome to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary.

Swift works in close collaboration with its adhesives supplier, Scigrip which supplies cyanoacrylate, methyl methacrylate, anaerobic and UV-cure adhesives. Another advance springing from this collaboration was the elimination of mechanical fasteners from the fuel filler cap of the Esprit motorhome. In this instance, Scigrip supplied its SG 5,000-06 methyl methacrylate adhesive, a high viscosity two-part adhesive which is able to bond GRP components as well as metals and coated metal parts.

The all-composite motorhome has performed well in rigorous endurance testing that simulates six years of use and which includes curb strikes and thermal performance tests.
