Since 2012, Avery Dennison has been working with the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) to develop pressure sensitive label adhesives that will adhere to containers throughout their life-span – until they reach the recyclers - when labels are cleanly peeled away in a sink/float process. The resulting CleanFlake Portfolio has now been expanded to include paper facestocks, and the adhesive complies with EU REACH regulations.
A spokesperson for Avery Dennison says that the demand for recycled PET is rising and that brand owners want to ensure that their product packaging is not only impactful and attractive, but fully recyclable. When adhesives or label fragments remain on packaging, high-quality PET can’t be obtained from them, and the material either has to be recycled into lower-grade plastics or dumped in landfills.
The CleanFlake portfolio previously did not cater for paper facestocks, but the expanded offering does, providing manufacturers with new product presentation options while still ensuring recovery of pure PET when it’s time for packaging to be recycled.
