ASTM Proposes Standard to Determine Sealant Longevity

Posted By ASC, Wednesday, June 15, 2016

The ASTM Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants is in the process of developing a standard that aims to make accelerated sealant design life testing possible for makers of joint sealants used in the construction industry. The resulting guide, WK48490, Practice for Developing Accelerated Tests to Aid Prediction of the Design Life of Sealants, will set out the steps that need to be followed for accelerated sealant testing procedures.

ASTM commented that it is important to determine just how long sealants will last under real conditions, but that accelerated design life testing will be needed. The new standard will deal with the testing of sealants used for building insulation and water-proofing. He believes that the protocol will be helpful to companies that are developing new sealant products and systems for the construction industry.

ASTM says that participation from the sealants industry is welcomed during the formulation of standards such as this.
