FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ASC ANNOUNCES MEMBERSHIP WITH IACMI AS PART OF THE
GROWTH INITIATIVE IN THE TRANSPORTATION SEGMENT
Council to Focus on Information Dissemination to
its Members to Accelerate Bonding Dissimilar Materials with the
Goal of Warming the Market For Bonding Using Adhesives
May 19, 2016 – Bethesda, MD – The Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) has become a Consortium Member at IACMI (Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation) and has held initial meetings with the ASC Growth Task Force and IACMI-The Composites Institute leadership. This new partnership is a result of the strategic growth initiative at ASC.
The purpose of ASC joining IACMI is to foster communication between IACMI and ASC members. Access to IACMI projects and identification of joining challenges will help accelerate adoption of adhesives, and will aid in developing solutions that make end users final products stronger, lighter and more durable. ASC’s role to educate the market of the benefits of adhesives is parallel to IACMI’s overarching mission of accelerating the development and commercial deployment of advanced composites by sharing resources and co-investing in the composites ecosystem. The partnership is part of ASC’s long range plan focused on growth.
Working with IACMI, Industrial Market Insight and a member-driven Growth Program Task Force, ASC will act as an initial information provider that will give the Council an opportunity to make our members aware of the projects, equipment, subject matter experts and overall resources within the IACMI umbrella and its partners including the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“The opportunity to partner with a variety of stakeholders through the value chain on how vehicles will be bonded in the future is a significant access point for ASC member companies,” notes Steve Duren, Senior Director at ASC. “ASC member companies have an opportunity to individually join IACMI to further engage in activities regarding the next generation of automobile materials joining. ASC member companies represent many of the brightest adhesive focused scientists and researchers in the world...”
“We are pleased to welcome ASC as an IACMI-The Composites Institute consortium member,” said Dr. Craig Blue, Institute CEO. “Gaining ASC as a member strengthens the diversity and expertise of the entire organization.”
ASC, along with Industrial Market Insight and a cross section of IACMI members, recently focused on Joining of Dissimilar materials prioritization of industry issues in a road mapping meeting in Detroit Michigan on May 10/11. Top research and development areas being considered for future projects are in the following areas and will be refined and sharpened further by IACMI on an ongoing basis:
- Joining of Dissimilar Materials
- Computer Modeling
- Advanced NDE/NDI
- Knowledge Management & Sharing of Existing Information
- Demonstration / Proof of Concept
The following were the categories of technical gaps that stakeholders identified as key areas that need to be addressed to help IACMI reach its goals:
- Lifetime Performance Prediction
- NDE/NDI Tools & Standards
- Joint Design & Selection of Joining Methods
- Industrialization & Automation
- Surface Preparation
