When repairing collision-related damage, structural bonding is often required. Now the adhesives industry in the form of 3M has come up with a solution that has been approved by OEMs: a two-part epoxy adhesive that adheres to a range of automotive body part substrates including steel and aluminium. The 3M Impact Resistant Structural Adhesive 07333/57333 allows for a protracted working time, and is then cured using heat.
In the development of the adhesive, 3M worked with a number of OEMs, and the resulting product addresses several collision repair issues. In addition, it is recommended for use on weld-bonded and rivet-bonded joints.
The automotive collision repair market is valued at over $166.98 billion and is expected grow steadily. Although collision fatalities have decreased owing to improved vehicle safety features, collisions have increased. 2014 saw 14 million collision repairs in the US and more than 30 million in Europe.
