Engineering Tips from DesignWorld Online Offer Insight on Achieving Sound Structural Bonds Using Adhesives

Posted By ASC, Friday, October 30, 2015

Engineering website DesignWorldOnline has observed that adhesive bonding can produce much stronger, more structurally sound bonds than traditional welding, screwing and riveting.  This is especially true of polymer bonding or bonds involving multi-metal mixes. However, designers must take the surface area needed to form a sound bond into account, since end-to-end joining of materials will not provide sufficient structural strength. Overlaps, tongue in groove designs and the use of sleeves for cylindrical joins are recommended, and these should be provided for during the design stage. Designs should also allow for an adequate bonding gap to ensure that consistent adhesive layer thickness can be achieved...MORE
