BMW’s increased use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics allows advanced adhesives to replace traditional bonding methods such as welding or bolting, halving the production line time needed for assembly. According to BMW, the new adhesive begins to work within 90 seconds and takes only an hour and a half to harden completely.
Additional benefits of the adhesive include the reduction of noise and vibration and increased static and dynamic stiffness as well as a higher load-bearing capacity. This, according to BMW, will also improve safety performance in the event of a crash.
Dow Automotive is responsible for the development of the new adhesive which was customized to match BMW’s assembly processes and time requirements. The adhesive technology allows the use of lightweight materials which will improve fuel economy, resulting in reduced emissions.
The adhesive, known as BETAFORCE enables BMW to apply shorter cycle times (the time needed for a production line process) and a flexible open time (time during which the adhesive can be exposed prior to bonding).
