The US Food & Drug Administration has approved the first continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for people with diabetes. The G5 glucose monitor manufactured by Dexcom has a design much like a Band-aid, with and adhesive backing that attaches a sensor and transmitter to the user. The transmitter can then relay information about the person’s glucose level to an Apple iOS device. Compatibility with Andriod devices is expected next year. The device takes advantage of bio-compatible adhesive to provide long-term monitoring. At present, the CGM still requires twice daily calibration with the traditional finger-stick method. In the future, Dexcom expects to untether the device from finger sticks, moving toward a goal of one calibration per day and extended 10-day wear.
