Maintenance engineers work to maintain safe, reliable equipment for manufacturing and assembly. Planned and well-timed application of sealants, coatings and adhesives can minimize downtime for maintenance and repairs. Five of the most common equipment and facility failure can be addressed with the use of adhesives and sealants: vibrational loosening, air and hydraulic leaks from threaded closures, spun bearings and keyway wallow, gasket failure and equipment wear. Thread lockers and thread sealants can address both vibrational loosening and leaks from threading. High friction fitted parts and key stocks and keyways can be held in place with friction, but the addition of retaining compounds provide added strength and reliability. Gasket sealant and adhesive can be used to fill and secure flanges. And finally, wear from physical contact, chemical exposure and corrosion can be reduced with epoxy-based protective coatings.
