HydraForce Inc. is a successful manufacturer of hydraulic valve, manifold and electronic controls. They are also the world’s largest manufacturer of hydraulic cartridge valves. In an ongoing effort to improve production efficiency, HydraForce has used Loctite threadlockers from Henkel and recently conducted a plant survey with Henkel experts to explore areas for improvement. During the survey, Henkel engineers found that the company was using an early version of Loctite 648 to manufacture hydraulic cartridge valves. They recommended an upgraded formulation of Loctite 648, which cures rapidly on metal without requiring an activator and bonds through contaminants. But before adopting this newer Loctite formulation, engineers from both companies designed and performed a series of validation tests. Jesse Arias—Design Engineer for HydraForce—found that parts on valves assembled with fast-setting Loctite 648 retaining compound could withstand 1,000 ft-lb of torque after just 5 minutes. This led to another key change, allowing parts to move through production without pause where previously parts were set aside to cure for 1 – 4 hours.
