Medical adhesives are increasingly used in place of, or along with, stitches. Until recently, none of these adhesives could be used inside the body. Now, the US Food & Drug Administration has approved TissueGlu from Cohera Medical for use inside the body. TissueGlu is non-toxic and biodegradable, meaning that it will safely breakdown over time. It was developed because a team at the University of Pittsburgh was attempting to create a tissue regeneration membrane. While working on that project, they accidentally discovered a sticky, glue-like substance, and fortunately they recognized its potential. That sticky substance went through extensive testing and refinement to become TissueGlu. Testing demonstrated that the adhesive is strong, safe, and effective. Its use can help reduce fluid accumulation by holding tissues closely together. Ultimately it can improve recovery and reduce complications after surgical procedures. TissueGlu has been approved for use in operations that remove extra fat and skin, as well as breast cancer and lymph node dissection surgeries.
