ASC PARTNERS WITH INDUSTRY LEADERS TO DEVELOP, PROMOTE “THE WORLD OF GLUE” EDUCATIONAL LESSON PLAN

ELMER’S®, DPNA INTERNATIONAL AND HB FULLER COLLABORATE TO EDUCATE ELEMENTARY AGED STUDENTS ON BASICS OF ADHESION

November 13, 2013 – Bethesda, MD – The Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) announces the availability of The World of Glue: an Investigation of Adhesives, an instructional unit that educates elementary students on the common properties of adhesives and the science of polymers.  The materials were developed in partnership with Elmer’s® Products, Inc. and DPNA International, with an additional promotional video contributed by HB Fuller.

The World of Glue lesson plan and promotional video can be found at ASC’s educational website here.

“We are pleased to work with the marketing teams at Elmer’s, DPNA International, and HB Fuller to design this program, and are proud to host the information on our award-winning educational platform—adhesives.org, notes Matthew E. Croson, President of ASC.  “Adhesives and sealants literally touch everything a student comes into contact with from the time they wake up, to the time they go to sleep, and the educational materials we have put together with Elmer’s and DPNA really tell that story, while also highlighting the science behind adhesives.”

The 15 page lesson plan includes information supportive of six learning objectives:

  • Students will understand the concepts related to polymers as the building blocks for adhesives and glues.

  • Students will identify examples of adhesives used in the world around them.

  • Students will read informational text about a relevant topic to understand events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical context.

  • Students will demonstrate their understanding of these scientific concepts in oral presentations or dramatic performances to the class.

  • Students will work in teams to solve a problem.

  • Students will observe and record the properties observed when two substances are combined.

The World of Glue is part of Elmer’s Teachers Club, an exclusive and free online community designed to support educators with tips, projects, lessons and more.  DPNA International provided the idea for the development of the coursework and HB Fuller added value by contributing a video that explains the innovation and importance of the adhesives industry.  ASC edited the material and is hosting the information on the www.adhesives.org website here.

“This was a strong collaborative process with Elmer’s and DPNA taking the lead on the educational focus, HB Fuller supporting the effort with access to a key video it produced, and ASC hosting the resources and supporting the promotion of the efforts,” adds Croson.  “This is the first time ASC has ever partnered with organizations to focus on elementary age education, and we are proud of the efforts behind this program, and look forward to supporting thousands of children as they are introduced to the power of polymers and the building blocks of adhesives.”
