Message from the President – March 2012

ASC’s Technical Committee is overseeing three important value drivers for the Council

They are what many association executives call “quiet” projects, ones that deliver a great deal of value over time, but aren’t necessarily newsworthy, headline grabbing or drastically impacting anyone’s heart rate.

But, each is critical.

ASC Training Academy RFP – the Technical Committee reviewed and issued a Request for Proposals for developing content that supports the ASC Training Academy.  Industry and academia are responding with proposals to educate member company employees and end users on the “basics” and “benefits” of adhesives and sealants.

Next up:  ASC is reviewing the proposals in April and May in order to fine tune them into strong programs.

ASC – FEICA Adhesives and Sealants Classifications Manual review – the Technical Committee is spearheading the review of the official market classification definitions that are currently harmonized with the European Union.  The updated manual includes input from China and Japan.

Once completed, the Americas, EU, China and Japan will have harmonized market segment definitions, which will help when defining sales, trends and emerging issues as all of the primary markets for adhesives and sealants will be speaking the same language.

Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) Fundamentals of Packaging review of Adhesives Chapter – The IoPP asked for ASC’s support in reviewing, editing and enhancing the well-regarded “Fundamentals of Packaging” book it publishes for the packaging sector.  The 31-page chapter on adhesives provides definitions, information and illustrations on how adhesives are used within the packaging space.

This is an important opportunity to ensure that packaging engineers and designers are fully aware of the benefits of adhesives through solid science and benefits illustrations.

If you have been around any association, club or organization, you often hear the words “member driven.” But, what does that really mean?

In this case it means that members are giving hours of their time and applying their years of experience to ensure the future employees are trained properly, that we all speak the same language when it comes to defining our markets, and that our customers truly understand the value of adhesives.

I want to personally thank the 16 members of the Technical Committee for taking on these challenging projects, and for all 78 of the member volunteers who support the many facets of this organization through their commitment on the global resources, government relations, marketing and membership committees.

If you want to get involved in any of these committees and need to know more about what they are involved in, give me a call at 301-986-9700, ext 111 or email me at matt.croson@ascouncil.org.

Finally – I hope to see you all at next month’s Spring Convention and EXPO in Denver.  We have a strong program and solid attendance already….don’t miss an opportunity to learn, network, and participate in one of our committee meetings.  Register today at www.ascouncil.org.
