Nonomaterials & Organic Food Industry In October 2010 the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Standards Board (NSOB) issued a formal recommendation to the agency’s National Organic Program that engineered nanomaterials be prohibited in the processing, production and packaging of certified organic materials. ASC as part of a coalition of other associations concerned with the possible impacts such a recommendation could have on the organic food industry and its processing equipment and packaging material suppliers met with USDA officials in May 2011 to offer a more detailed description of the role engineered nanomaterials presently have in the organic food industry. At the present time it appears unlikely that National Organic Program will take any action on the NSOB recommendation.
